Associate Level Mechanical Engineer

We are seeking an Associate Level Mechanical Engineer to join Webb Yates Engineers in our London office.

Webb Yates Engineers is looking for an Associate Level Mechanical Engineer with minimum 6 years’ experience. Candidates will ideally have Engineering Level 7 or equivalent qualification and working towards Chartership status, preferably MCIBSE.

Candidates will have the ability to carry out analysis and design of building services systems and produce viable building services solutions, within the scope of a design brief, taking account of critical constraints, safety, sustainability and cost and the ability to carry out analysis and design of building services systems.

Candidates need to be confident in working independently as well as part of a team. Ideal candidates will have excellent client-facing and internal communication skills to motivate and lead projects and experience in mechanical design role running projects from conception through to completion.

Candidates will have experience of health and safety requirements and legislation and knowledge of relevant environmental and sustainability issues.

The successful candidate will be expected to be responsible for leading a building services engineering team producing designs and project deliverables, liaising with clients, attending meetings and construction sites, supervising and checking the production of project deliverables and leading day-to-day aspects of a range of projects.

Duties and key responsibilities / role:

  • Act as Project Director, Project Design Manager or Discipline lead as required by Webb Yates Engineers

Project Leadership (General)

  • Ensure the technical delivery of projects
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships at project level
  • Responsible for the day to day technical delivery of projects including getting reviews by senior members of staff
  • Responsible for client, external consultant and contractor’s communication
  • Ensure delivery of the project within the allocated budgets, programme and client’s expectations
  • Communicate with supporting disciplines regarding resource requirements

Project Director (General)

  • Responsible for maintaining and developing client relationships
  • Discuss and resolve with the client any issues they have with the performance of WYE
  • Responsible for ensuring the projects are delivered in line with company procedures
  • Review and agree project strategy (programme, fees, technical delivery, resourcing) with project lead
  • Review financial and technical performance of projects
  • Responsible for ensuring the project team are working within the agreed scope
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating billing plans and invoicing schedules
  • Provide technical support to projects in terms of reviews or facilitating Director or specialist input
  • Stand in for Project Lead when appropriate (sick, on leave, training courses etc)
  • If it arises, support the directors in managing and resolving claims when they arise, advise on changes in company policy and procedure to avoid future incidents

Project Finances

  • Ensure delivery of the project within the allocated budgets, programme and client’s expectations
  • Responsible for Monitoring and Reporting on project profitability
  • Responsible for agreeing additional fees for variations and additional scope
  • Responsible for updating Project Director of billing requirements
  • When acting as Project Director responsible for project billing


  • Manage production of Project Deliverables such as drawings, calculations, reports and specifications
  • Ensure the checking and reviewing of engineering designs and deliverables
  • Undertake discipline specific analysis and design
  • Produce viable technical solutions, within the scope of a design brief
  • Specify and co-ordinate the use of materials and systems
  • Design using relevant design codes and supplementary information
  • Advise the client and team on construction techniques and solutions
  • Advise the team and client on relevant environmental and sustainability issues and legislation
  • Advise on relevant statutory legislation
  • Advise on relevant construction and contract law where required
  • Advise on project procurement routes
  • Carrying out site visits and surveys

Team Management

  • Input into weekly project programming at team meetings
  • Input into resource forecasting (time and cost) at team meetings
  • Maintain resource forecast for your projects referring issues to Associate Director
  • Liaise with Project Director on project performance
  • Stand in for Associate Directors when unavailable

Business Development

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining external peer level relationships
  • Follow up and develop opportunities with existing clients
  • Support senior team where required in finding new opportunities
  • Support business development by maintaining relations and ensuring repeat business
  • Produce fee proposals for projects
